Robert E. Howard

Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas, and spent most of his life in the small town of Cross Plains. A prolific author, he wrote hundreds of stories for pulp magazines like Weird Tales, crafting vivid tales of adventure, horror, and historical fiction. His most famous creation, Conan the Cimmerian, debuted in the 1932 story "The Phoenix on the Sword" and became the archetype of the sword and sorcery hero. Howard's other notable series include Solomon Kane, Kull of Atlantis, and Bran Mak Morn. His writing is marked by a raw, energetic prose style and a deep sense of melancholy, often exploring themes of barbarism versus civilization. Despite his short life—he died by suicide at age 30—Howard's influence on fantasy and adventure fiction has been immense, inspiring countless authors, filmmakers, and artists. His Conan stories remain in print and have been adapted into comics, films, and games, securing his legacy as a foundational figure in modern fantasy.
