Raul Pompeia

Raul Pompeia was born in 1863 in Angra dos Reis, Brazil, and spent much of his youth in Rio de Janeiro. He studied law but devoted himself to literature, contributing to major periodicals of the time. His masterpiece, O Ateneu (1888), subtitled 'Chronicle of a Boarding School,' is a semi-autobiographical novel that recounts the experiences of a boy at a prestigious boarding school. The novel is notable for its refined prose, symbolic imagery, and critical portrayal of the Brazilian elite, blending Naturalist observation with a subjective, almost modernist sensibility. Pompeia also wrote short stories and chronicles, but his literary legacy rests largely on this single work, which is considered a cornerstone of Brazilian literature. He died tragically in 1895, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be studied for its psychological insight and stylistic daring.
