R. D. Blackmore

Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825–1900) was born in Longworth, Berkshire, and educated at Blundell's School and Exeter College, Oxford. After a brief legal career, he turned to market gardening and writing. His most famous novel, Lorna Doone (1869), set in 17th-century Exmoor, became a classic of English historical romance, praised for its atmospheric landscape and strong heroine. Blackmore also wrote The Maid of Sker (1872), a gripping tale of smuggling and shipwreck on the Welsh coast. Though he never achieved the same fame again, his work influenced later regional novelists. Blackmore's legacy rests on Lorna Doone, which remains in print and has been adapted for film and television, securing his place as a master of romantic adventure fiction.
