Procopius

Procopius of Caesarea (c. 500–565 AD) was a Byzantine scholar and historian from the Roman province of Palaestina Prima. He served as a legal adviser and secretary to the general Belisarius, accompanying him on military campaigns in Persia, Africa, and Italy. His major works include the "History of the Wars," an eight-book account of Justinian's military campaigns, and "On Buildings," a panegyric on the emperor's construction projects. However, his most famous work is "The Secret History" (Anecdota), a scathing exposé of the private lives and corruption of Justinian, his wife Theodora, and Belisarius. Though controversial for its vitriol, the text provides invaluable insight into the political and social undercurrents of the 6th-century Byzantine Empire. Procopius's blend of classical historiography and firsthand observation makes him a crucial source for late antiquity.
