Philip MacDonald

Philip MacDonald (1900–1980) was an English author of crime and mystery novels, a key figure in the Golden Age of detective fiction. Born in London, he initially worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood before turning to novels. His first book, "The Rasp" (1924), introduced the urbane detective Anthony Gethryn, who would appear in many subsequent works. MacDonald's plots were noted for their intricate puzzles and psychological depth, often blending traditional whodunit elements with suspense. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Martin Porlock and Anthony Lawless. His later career included screenwriting for films such as "The Body Snatcher" (1945). Though less remembered today, his contributions to the genre influenced later writers, and his early works remain admired by fans of classic mysteries.
