Philip Francis Nowlan

Philip Francis Nowlan (1888–1946) was an American author and newspaperman, best remembered as the creator of the iconic science fiction hero Buck Rogers. Born in Philadelphia, Nowlan worked as a writer and editor for various newspapers and trade publications. His most famous work, the novella "Armageddon 2419 A.D.," first appeared in the August 1928 issue of Amazing Stories. It introduced protagonist Anthony Rogers, a World War I veteran who awakens in the 25th century to find a world dominated by the Mongol Han dynasty. Nowlan followed this with a sequel, "The Airlords of Han" (1929). The stories were later adapted into a highly popular comic strip, radio serial, and film serial, cementing Buck Rogers as a foundational figure in American science fiction. Nowlan's work helped define the space opera subgenre and influenced generations of writers and creators, though he published relatively little beyond the Buck Rogers saga.
