Owen Johnson

Owen Johnson was born on August 27, 1878, in New York City. He attended the Lawrenceville School and later Yale University, graduating in 1900. His experiences at these institutions deeply influenced his writing. Johnson gained fame for his series of stories about the Lawrenceville School, including "The Prodigious Hickey" and "The Varmint," which captured the humor and challenges of boarding school life. His most enduring work, "Stover at Yale" (1912), is a novel that critically examines the social and ethical pressures of college life, particularly the influence of secret societies and class distinctions. Johnson also wrote plays and served as a war correspondent during World War I. While his later works did not achieve the same acclaim, his early novels remain significant for their realistic portrayal of American youth and education. Johnson died on January 27, 1952, in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts.
