Olaf Stapledon

William Olaf Stapledon was born in 1886 in Wallasey, England. He studied history and philosophy at Oxford and later earned a PhD in philosophy, which deeply informed his writing. His first major work, 'Last and First Men' (1930), is a sweeping future history of humanity spanning billions of years, told from the perspective of the last human species. This was followed by 'Last Men in London' (1932) and 'Star Maker' (1937), which expanded his cosmic vision. Stapledon's works are noted for their philosophical depth, imaginative scope, and influence on later science fiction authors such as Arthur C. Clarke and Brian Aldiss. He also wrote non-fiction on philosophy and politics. Stapledon died in 1950, leaving a legacy as one of the most intellectually ambitious writers in the genre.
