Octavia Butler

Octavia Estelle Butler was born in Pasadena, California, in 1947. Overcoming dyslexia and poverty, she began writing science fiction as a teenager and became one of the genre's most influential voices. Her acclaimed novel Kindred (1979) uses time travel to confront the brutal realities of American slavery. Other major works include the Patternist series, Parable of the Sower (1993), and Parable of the Talents (1998), which envision dystopian futures shaped by environmental collapse and social inequality. Butler was the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship (1995). Her work consistently challenges genre conventions, centering Black protagonists and systemic critiques. She died in 2006, but her legacy endures as a foundational figure in Afrofuturism and speculative fiction.
