Mourning Dove

Mourning Dove (Christine Quintasket) was born in 1888 in the Colville Reservation, Washington. Raised in the Okanogan tradition, she worked as a teacher and activist for Native rights. Her novel 'Cogewea, the Half-Blood' (1927), written with Lucullus Virgil McWhorter, is a pioneering work of Native American literature, exploring identity, cultural conflict, and the role of women. She also collected and published Okanogan legends in 'Coyote Stories' (1933). Her writing preserves oral traditions while addressing the pressures of assimilation. Mourning Dove died in 1936, leaving a legacy as one of the first Native American women to publish a novel, influencing later Indigenous writers.
