Miles Franklin

Miles Franklin, born Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin in 1879 in Talbingo, New South Wales, was a pioneering Australian author and feminist. Her first novel, "My Brilliant Career" (1901), written when she was just 16, became a classic of Australian literature for its vivid portrayal of a young woman's struggle against societal expectations in the bush. After its success, Franklin lived abroad for decades, working in London and Chicago, and writing under pseudonyms. She returned to Australia in the 1930s, where she continued writing and advocating for women's rights and Australian cultural identity. Her later works include "All That Swagger" (1936) and the "Brent of Bin Bin" series. Franklin's literary legacy endures through the Miles Franklin Award, established by her bequest, which annually recognizes the best Australian novel. Her writing remains celebrated for its authentic voice and feminist themes.
