Mikhail Artsybashev

Mikhail Petrovich Artsybashev was born in 1878 in the Kharkiv region of the Russian Empire. He began his literary career in the early 1900s, gaining notoriety with his 1907 novel "Sanine," which became a bestseller and a touchstone for the Russian Decadent movement. The novel's protagonist, a hedonistic individualist, challenged traditional moral and social norms, sparking widespread debate. Artsybashev also wrote plays and short stories, often focusing on themes of pessimism, sexuality, and the conflict between the individual and society. After the Russian Revolution, he emigrated to Poland, where he continued writing until his death in 1927. His legacy lies in his bold exploration of taboo subjects, influencing later existential and modernist currents in Russian literature.
