孟元老

Meng Yuanlao (孟元老) was a Chinese writer of the Northern Song dynasty, though little is known of his personal life. He is remembered for his sole surviving work, 'Dongjing Meng Hua Lu' (東京夢華錄, 'The Eastern Capital: A Dream of Splendor'), written around 1147, after the Jurchen invasion forced the Song court to flee south. The book is a nostalgic, meticulously detailed recollection of Kaifeng, the former capital, covering its streets, markets, festivals, cuisine, and social customs. It is invaluable to historians for its vivid portrayal of urban life in 12th-century China. Meng's work influenced later memoirs and became a model for urban ethnography, preserving a cultural memory that shaped how later generations imagined the lost glory of the Northern Song.
