May Sinclair

May Sinclair (1863-1946) was a prolific English writer whose career spanned poetry, criticism, and fiction. Born in Cheshire, she was largely self-educated and became an early advocate of psychoanalysis, incorporating its ideas into her work. Her novel Mary Olivier: A Life (1919) is a semi-autobiographical portrait of a woman's intellectual and emotional development, noted for its innovative use of interior monologue. Sinclair's critical writings helped introduce the term 'stream of consciousness' to English letters, and she was a key figure in the transition from Victorian to modernist literature. She published over twenty novels, including The Divine Fire and The Life and Death of Harriett Frean, and was a member of the Suffrage movement. Her work influenced later modernist writers and remains studied for its psychological depth and formal experimentation.
