Mary Butts

Mary Butts (1890–1937) was an English modernist novelist, poet, and short story writer. Born in Dorset, she was deeply influenced by the landscape of her childhood and by her studies in classical literature and the occult. Her most celebrated novel, Armed with Madness (1928), is a dense, symbolic work that reimagines the Grail legend in a contemporary setting, reflecting her fascination with myth, ritual, and the supernatural. Butts also wrote The Death of Felicity Taverner and several collections of stories and essays. Though her work fell into obscurity after her early death, it has been rediscovered by scholars of modernism and feminist literary criticism. Her prose is noted for its poetic intensity, psychological insight, and engagement with esoteric traditions, placing her alongside contemporaries like Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes.
