Martin Andersen Nexø

Martin Andersen Nexø (1869-1954) was a Danish novelist and one of the first major voices of socialist realism in European literature. Born in a poor working-class district of Copenhagen, he grew up in dire poverty on the island of Bornholm, experiences that deeply shaped his writing. His most famous work, "Pelle the Conqueror" (1906-1910), is a four-volume epic following a young boy from rural Sweden who becomes a labor activist in Denmark. The novel, based partly on his own life, won international acclaim for its vivid portrayal of class struggle and human resilience. Nexø later wrote the trilogy "Ditte, Daughter of Man" and the unfinished "Morten the Red." A committed communist, he spent his later years in exile in East Germany, where he died. His legacy endures as a foundational figure in proletarian literature, influencing generations of socially engaged writers.
