Mark Rutherford

William Hale White, writing as Mark Rutherford, was born in Bedford, England, and trained for the Nonconformist ministry, but his religious doubts led him to leave the church. He turned to journalism and civil service, and late in life published a series of semi-autobiographical novels. His major works include The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford (1881), Mark Rutherford's Deliverance (1885), and The Revolution in Tanner's Lane (1887). These novels are noted for their quiet, introspective realism and their honest portrayal of spiritual crisis, political idealism, and the struggles of ordinary people. Though never a popular success, Rutherford gained a devoted readership among literary figures such as Matthew Arnold and D. H. Lawrence, and his work is valued for its psychological depth and moral seriousness.
