Marilynne Robinson

Marilynne Robinson was born in 1943 in Sandpoint, Idaho. She earned a PhD in English from the University of Washington and published her first novel, Housekeeping, in 1980, which was praised for its meditative prose and exploration of loss, memory, and transience. After a long hiatus, she returned with Gilead (2004), winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, followed by Home (2008) and Lila (2014), both finalists for the National Book Award. These novels form a loose trilogy set in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa, examining faith, grace, and family across generations. Robinson is also a distinguished essayist, with collections such as The Death of Adam (1998) and When I Was a Child I Read Books (2012), reflecting her interests in theology, history, and American culture. Her work is celebrated for its quiet intensity, moral seriousness, and profound engagement with the ordinary.
