Margaret Oliphant

Margaret Oliphant (1828–1897) was a Scottish novelist, biographer, and historian who published over 120 works, including novels, short stories, and literary criticism. She is best remembered for her Chronicles of Carlingford series, which includes "Salem Chapel," "The Perpetual Curate," and "Miss Marjoribanks." These novels offer a nuanced portrait of Victorian provincial life, blending social realism with sharp character studies. Oliphant also wrote supernatural fiction, such as "A Beleaguered City," and historical works like "The Makers of Florence." Despite personal tragedies, including the deaths of her husband and children, she maintained a prolific output to support her family.
