Manly Wade Wellman

Manly Wade Wellman (1903-1986) was a prolific American writer of fantasy, horror, and historical fiction, best remembered for his series of stories featuring John the Balladeer, a wandering minstrel who battles supernatural evils in the Appalachian mountains. Born in Portuguese West Africa to American missionaries, Wellman grew up in Kansas and later settled in North Carolina, where the region's folklore deeply influenced his work. He began publishing in the pulp magazines of the 1920s, contributing to Weird Tales, Unknown, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. His novel "Who Fears the Devil?" (1963) collected many John stories, and he won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1980. Wellman's literary legacy lies in his unique blend of American folk traditions, eerie atmosphere, and heroic protagonists, earning him a lasting place in the canon of supernatural fiction.
