M. P. Shiel

Matthew Phipps Shiel was born in 1865 on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, then a British colony, to a Methodist minister and a mother of mixed African and European descent. He moved to England in the 1880s, where he studied medicine and later turned to writing. Shiel gained attention for his ornate, decadent style and his fascination with extreme states of mind and society. His novel The Purple Cloud (1901) follows the last man on Earth after a poisonous gas kills humanity, blending adventure with existential dread. He also wrote historical romances and detective stories, including the Prince Zaleski series. Though his work fell into obscurity, Shiel is now recognized as a significant precursor to modern apocalyptic and weird fiction, influencing writers like H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King.
