Luís de Camões

Luís de Camões (c. 1524–1580) was a Portuguese poet and soldier, widely regarded as the national poet of Portugal. His masterpiece, 'Os Lusíadas' (1572), is an epic poem that narrates the history of Portugal, focusing on Vasco da Gama's sea route to India. Written in Homeric style, it blends classical mythology with Christian and nationalist themes, establishing Camões as a central figure of the Renaissance. His life was marked by military service, exile, and a shipwreck, experiences that enriched his writing. Besides the epic, he composed lyric poetry, sonnets, and plays, though much of his work was published posthumously. Camões's influence on Portuguese identity is immense; his verse is celebrated on Portugal's national day, and his legacy endures as a symbol of the Portuguese language and its global reach.
