Ludovico Ariosto

Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533) was a leading Italian poet of the Renaissance, born in Reggio Emilia. He spent most of his career in the service of the Este family in Ferrara, working as a courtier and diplomat. His masterpiece, Orlando Furioso (first published in 1516, with expanded editions in 1521 and 1532), is a chivalric romance epic that continues the story of Orlando from Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato. The poem weaves together themes of love, war, madness, and adventure, blending classical influences with medieval romance. Ariosto's work profoundly influenced later European literature, including Shakespeare, Spenser, and Cervantes. His polished ottava rima style and ironic narrative voice established him as a master of Renaissance epic. Ariosto also wrote comedies and satires, but Orlando Furioso remains his enduring legacy.
