Louis Couperus

Louis Couperus (1863-1923) is one of the most significant figures in Dutch literature, celebrated for his richly descriptive prose and psychological depth. Born in The Hague, he spent part of his youth in the Dutch East Indies, an experience that deeply influenced his later writing. His major works include the naturalistic novel "Eline Vere" (1889) and the symbolist masterpiece "The Hidden Force" (1900), which examines colonial tensions in Java. Couperus also wrote historical novels, such as "The Books of the Small Souls" series, and travelogues. His style blends fin-de-siècle decadence with keen social observation, earning him international acclaim. Couperus's legacy endures as a master of Dutch prose, bridging realism and modernism, and his works remain widely read and studied for their nuanced portrayal of human frailty and cultural conflict.
