Linda Brent

Harriet Jacobs, writing under the pseudonym Linda Brent, was born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina, around 1818. After years of hiding and eventual escape to the North, she published "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" in 1861. The book is a powerful first-person account of her struggle for freedom and her harrowing experiences, including sexual harassment and the desperate measures she took to protect her children. Unlike many earlier slave narratives, Jacobs focused on the specific vulnerabilities of enslaved women. Initially overlooked by mainstream literary scholarship, the work was rediscovered in the late 20th century and is now recognized as a crucial text in African American literature and women's history. Jacobs also worked as an abolitionist and, after the Civil War, engaged in relief efforts for freed people.
