李汝珍

Li Ruzhen (c. 1775–1817) was a Chinese writer and philologist of the Qing dynasty. Born in Daxing (near Beijing), he spent much of his life in relative obscurity, working as a minor official and pursuing scholarly interests in phonetics and etymology. His sole novel, 'Flowers in the Mirror' (Jinghua Yuan, 1828), is a sprawling fantasy that follows a merchant's voyage to fantastical lands and the subsequent examinations of a group of talented women. The novel is celebrated for its imaginative world-building, sharp social satire, and progressive views on women's education and abilities. Li's work, though not widely recognized during his lifetime, later gained acclaim for its originality and depth, influencing later Chinese fiction and earning a place as a classic of Qing literature.
