Laurence Sterne

Laurence Sterne (1713–1768) was an Irish-born English novelist and Anglican clergyman. Educated at Cambridge, he entered the church but gained lasting fame as a writer. His masterpiece, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759–1767), is a radical experiment in narrative form, featuring digressions, typographical play, and a self-conscious narrator. The novel defied conventional plot and chronology, influencing later modernist and postmodernist literature. Sterne also wrote A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1768), which helped shape the sentimental novel. His works are noted for their wit, satire, and exploration of human consciousness. Despite his short life, Sterne’s innovative techniques left a lasting legacy on the development of the novel.
