Júlio Ribeiro

Júlio Ribeiro was born in Sabará, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1845. He worked as a journalist, teacher, and public official, and was a fervent advocate of positivism and scientific naturalism. His most famous work, 'A Carne' (1888), exemplifies the Naturalist style, exploring themes of sexual instinct and social determinism through the story of a widow's passionate affair. The novel caused a scandal for its explicit content and was publicly condemned, yet it secured Ribeiro's place in Brazilian literary history as a bold innovator. He also wrote the novel 'O Padre Belchior de Pontes' (1876) and various journalistic pieces. Ribeiro died in 1890, leaving a legacy as a key proponent of Naturalism in Brazil, influencing later writers with his uncompromising realism and psychological depth.
