Joshua Slocum

Joshua Slocum (1844-1909) was a Nova Scotia-born American seaman who became the first person to circumnavigate the globe single-handedly. After a career commanding merchant and fishing vessels, he rebuilt the derelict sloop Spray and set out from Boston in 1895. Over three years, he sailed over 46,000 miles, documenting his voyage in Sailing Alone Around the World (1900). The book, praised for its vivid storytelling and practical seamanship, established him as a pioneer of solo ocean navigation. His later works include Voyage of the Liberdade and The Voyage of the Destroyer, but none matched the enduring appeal of his circumnavigation narrative. Slocum disappeared at sea in 1909 while sailing to the West Indies, leaving a legacy that inspired generations of adventurers and writers.
