Joseph Jacobs

Joseph Jacobs was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1854 and educated at Cambridge University. He became a prominent folklorist and historian, editing the journal "Folk-Lore" and publishing influential collections such as "English Fairy Tales" (1890) and "Celtic Fairy Tales" (1891). His work helped standardize many classic tales for English-speaking audiences. Jacobs also compiled "Indian Fairy Tales" (1892), drawing from ancient Sanskrit sources like the Panchatantra and Jataka tales. He emphasized the oral origins and cross-cultural diffusion of folklore, contributing to the scholarly study of comparative mythology. Jacobs later moved to the United States, where he taught and wrote on Jewish history. His accessible retellings remain widely read, shaping modern perceptions of traditional fairy tales.
