Joseph Furphy

Joseph Furphy, born in 1843 in Yering, Victoria, was a key figure in early Australian literature. After working as a bullock driver, farmer, and foundry hand, he wrote Such Is Life (1903), a sprawling, comic novel set in the Riverina region. The book, originally published under the pseudonym Tom Collins, is noted for its realistic depiction of outback characters and its philosophical digressions. Furphy's writing, which also includes Rigby's Romance and The Buln-Buln and the Brolga, helped establish a distinct Australian literary voice. His work influenced later writers like Patrick White and is considered a classic of Australian realism. Furphy died in 1912 in Claremont, Western Australia.
