José Rizal

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Philippines. A polymath skilled in medicine, languages, and the arts, he became a leading voice for reform through his writings. His first novel, "Noli Me Tangere" (1887), critiqued Spanish colonial abuses and the Catholic Church's power, while its sequel, "El Filibusterismo" (1891), explored themes of revolution and sacrifice. Both novels were banned in the Philippines but circulated clandestinely, galvanizing the independence movement. Rizal was executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896, for sedition, becoming a martyr. His literary legacy endures as a cornerstone of Philippine identity, blending Enlightenment ideals with a call for social justice.
