Johanna Spyri

Johanna Spyri was born on June 12, 1827, in Hirzel, Switzerland, to a doctor and a poet mother. She married a lawyer, Bernhard Spyri, and began writing in her late thirties. Her most famous work, "Heidi" (1880), tells the story of an orphan girl living with her grandfather in the Alps and became an international sensation, translated into over fifty languages. Spyri also wrote other novels for children and young adults, such as "Cornelli" (1888), which explores themes of family, resilience, and moral growth. Her writing is noted for its vivid descriptions of Swiss rural life and its gentle didacticism. Spyri died on July 7, 1901, in Zurich. Her legacy endures through "Heidi," which remains a cornerstone of children's literature and a beloved cultural symbol of Switzerland.
