Jean Toomer

Jean Toomer was born in Washington, D.C., in 1894. After studying agriculture and physical education, he turned to writing, publishing his seminal work Cane in 1923. The book is a lyrical, fragmented portrait of Black Southern experience, drawing on his time teaching in rural Georgia. Though celebrated by contemporaries like Langston Hughes, Toomer resisted racial categorization and later distanced himself from the Harlem Renaissance, focusing on spiritual and philosophical pursuits. He published little fiction afterward, writing essays and poetry under the influence of G. I. Gurdjieff's teachings. Cane remains a landmark of American modernism, praised for its innovative structure and profound influence on later African American literature.
