James Branch Cabell

James Branch Cabell (1879–1958) was an American novelist and essayist, born in Richmond, Virginia, into a distinguished but financially diminished family. He wrote extensively in a highly stylized, archaizing prose, often set in the fictional medieval French province of Poictesme. His major works include "Jurgen" (1919), a comic fantasy that became the subject of a celebrated obscenity prosecution, which he ultimately won, and "Figures of Earth" (1921). Cabell's multi-volume Biography of the Life of Manuel, a linked series of novels exploring themes of chivalry, illusion, and human striving, includes "The Cream of the Jest" and "Domnei." Though his reputation waned after the 1920s, Cabell influenced later fantasy writers and was a key figure in the Southern Renaissance. His work is noted for its sophisticated pessimism and playful erudition.
