Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm

Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859) Grimm were pioneering German philologists and folklorists. Born in Hanau, they studied law at the University of Marburg, where they developed an interest in medieval literature and linguistics. Their major work, 'Kinder- und Hausmärchen' (Children's and Household Tales), first published in 1812, grew from their efforts to preserve German oral traditions. The collection, later known as 'Grimm's Fairy Tales,' included classics like 'Cinderella,' 'Hansel and Gretel,' and 'Rumpelstiltskin.' Beyond fairy tales, they initiated the monumental 'Deutsches Wörterbuch' (German Dictionary), though they did not complete it. Their work laid foundations for the academic study of folklore and Germanic philology. The brothers' legacy endures through their tales' global influence on literature, film, and popular culture, making them central figures in the Romantic movement's celebration of national heritage.
