J. S. Fletcher

Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863–1935) was an English writer and journalist who produced an astonishing body of work, including more than 230 books. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, he began his career as a journalist before turning to fiction. Fletcher is best remembered for his detective novels, many featuring the amateur sleuth Ronald Camberwell or the professional investigator Frank Spargo. Works such as 'The Middle Temple Murder' (1919) and 'Scarhaven Keep' (1922) were highly popular in their day and contributed to the development of the classic British mystery. His plots often involved intricate puzzles, legal twists, and atmospheric settings. Though overshadowed by contemporaries like Agatha Christie, Fletcher's influence on the genre is significant, and his novels remain readable examples of early 20th-century crime fiction.
