J.-K. Huysmans

Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848–1907) began his career as a naturalist writer under the influence of Émile Zola, but soon broke away to forge a highly individual style. His novel "Against the Grain" (À rebours, 1884) is a landmark of Decadent literature, chronicling the eccentric, artificial world of its reclusive protagonist. Huysmans later turned to religious themes, exploring Satanism and mysticism in "Là-Bas" (1891), a dark novel set in occult circles. His later works, such as "En Route" (1895), reflect his conversion to Catholicism. Huysmans's vivid, sensory prose and his rejection of bourgeois realism influenced later Symbolist and modernist writers. He remains a crucial figure in the transition from 19th-century naturalism to 20th-century literary experimentation.
