Иван Гончаров

Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov was born in 1812 in Simbirsk, Russia, into a wealthy merchant family. After studying at Moscow University, he worked as a government official and literary critic. His first novel, 'A Common Story' (1847), gained critical acclaim, but it was his second novel, 'Oblomov' (1859), that secured his lasting fame. The title character, Ilya Oblomov, became an archetype of the lethargic Russian landowner, embodying the 'Oblomovism' that critics saw as a symbol of social stagnation. Goncharov's third novel, 'The Precipice' (1869), was less successful but completed his trilogy on Russian life. His prose is noted for its detailed realism, gentle satire, and psychological insight. Goncharov's legacy endures through 'Oblomov', which remains a cornerstone of Russian literature and a profound meditation on willpower, duty, and the human condition.
