Italo Calvino

Italo Calvino (1923–1985) was an Italian writer and intellectual, celebrated for his imaginative and structurally inventive fiction. Born in Cuba but raised in Italy, he began his career as a journalist and joined the Italian Resistance during World War II. His early works, such as The Path to the Spiders’ Nests, drew on neorealism, but he soon turned to allegorical and fantastical modes in the trilogy Our Ancestors (including The Cloven Viscount and The Baron in the Trees). Calvino’s later masterpieces, Invisible Cities (1972) and If on a winter’s night a traveler (1979), are landmark postmodern works that deconstruct narrative conventions while meditating on memory, language, and the act of reading. He also edited the influential collection Italian Folktales. Calvino’s legacy endures as a writer who merged playful erudition with profound philosophical inquiry, influencing generations of novelists and critics.
