Israel Zangwill

Israel Zangwill was born in London on February 21, 1864, to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. He rose to prominence with his 1892 novel "Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People," a realistic portrayal of London's Jewish community that established him as a leading voice in Anglo-Jewish literature. Zangwill also wrote the influential play "The Melting Pot" (1908), which popularized that term as a metaphor for cultural assimilation. His mystery novel "The Big Bow Mystery" (1892) is a classic locked-room puzzle and an early example of the genre. A committed Zionist and social activist, Zangwill's literary legacy lies in his vivid depictions of immigrant life and his exploration of identity, prejudice, and belonging. He died in 1926.
