Herbert Gorman

Herbert Sherman Gorman (1893–1954) was an American author and critic whose career spanned the 1920s through the 1940s. He wrote several novels, including The Place Called Dagon (1927), a work of supernatural fiction that blends psychological realism with eerie atmosphere. Gorman also gained recognition as a biographer, notably publishing James Joyce: His First Forty Years (1924), one of the earliest critical studies of the Irish modernist. His literary criticism appeared in prominent periodicals, and he was associated with the New York literary scene. While not as widely remembered today, Gorman contributed to the popularization of modernist authors and crafted fiction that explored themes of obsession and the uncanny. His work remains of interest to scholars of early twentieth-century American literature and supernatural fiction.
