Henry Handel Richardson

Henry Handel Richardson (1865-1946), born Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson in Melbourne, Australia, is a major figure in Australian literature. After her family moved to England, she studied music at the Royal College of Music before turning to writing. Her most famous work, "The Getting of Wisdom" (1910), is a semi-autobiographical novel about a young girl's education at a Melbourne boarding school, noted for its sharp psychological insight. Richardson's masterpiece is the trilogy "The Fortunes of Richard Mahony" (1917-1929), which traces the life of a gold-rush doctor and his family, exploring themes of ambition, displacement, and mental illness. Her work is celebrated for its realism, depth of character, and unflinching portrayal of colonial life. Richardson spent most of her adult life in England and Germany, but her literary legacy remains deeply tied to Australia, influencing later generations of writers.
