Henry Adams

Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918) was a member of the prominent Adams political family, grandson of President John Quincy Adams. He taught medieval history at Harvard and served as editor of the North American Review. His novel "Democracy" (1880), published anonymously, satirizes Washington political corruption. His masterpiece, "The Education of Henry Adams" (1918), is a modernist autobiography exploring the failure of traditional education in an age of accelerating technological and social change. Adams also wrote the nine-volume "History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison," a foundational work of American historiography. His literary legacy lies in his incisive cultural criticism, his philosophical meditation on the dynamo and the Virgin, and his influence on the development of American nonfiction prose.
