蘅塘退士

Sun Zhu (蘅塘退士, also known as Hengtang Tuishi) was a Qing dynasty scholar and poet from Wuxi, Jiangsu. Little is known of his life; he lived during the 18th century and served as a minor official. His enduring legacy rests on his compilation of the 'Tang Shi San Bai Shou' (Three Hundred Tang Poems), first published around 1763. The anthology was designed as a primer for children, selecting 311 poems by 77 poets, favoring accessible, lyrical works over obscure or overly erudite pieces. Its balanced representation of major Tang poets—including Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, and Bai Juyi—and its focus on universal themes of nature, friendship, and longing made it immensely popular. Over time, it became the standard introduction to Tang poetry in China and beyond, shaping the canon for generations. Despite his own modest literary output, Sun Zhu's editorial taste and pedagogical intent have had a profound and lasting impact on Chinese literary culture.
