H. C. Bailey

Henry Christopher Bailey (1878–1961) was an English journalist, novelist, and short story writer, born in London. After studying at Oxford, he worked as a journalist for the Daily Telegraph, where he honed his narrative skills. Bailey is chiefly remembered for his series of detective stories featuring the shrewd and witty medical consultant Reggie Fortune, who first appeared in 1918. Over several collections, including "Call Mr. Fortune" (1920), Bailey established Fortune as a beloved figure of the Golden Age of detective fiction, known for his deductive brilliance and humane approach. Bailey also wrote historical novels and other mysteries, but his Fortune stories remain his most enduring contribution. His work influenced later writers and helped popularize the "amateur sleuth" archetype in British crime literature.
