About the author
Guy Newell Boothby was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1856. After a brief political career and travels through Europe and Asia, he settled in England in the 1890s to pursue writing. He quickly became a bestselling author of sensational thrillers, producing over forty novels and numerous short stories. His most enduring character is the enigmatic Dr. Nikola, a master criminal and occultist who appears in five novels, including A Bid for Fortune (1895). Boothby's work, often compared to that of H. Rider Haggard and Bram Stoker, helped define the late-Victorian popular adventure and mystery genres. Though his reputation faded after his early death in 1907, his influence on early pulp fiction and the figure of the super-villain remains notable.
