Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa

Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa was a Sicilian prince and writer, best known for his only novel, The Leopard (Il Gattopardo). Born in Palermo into the ancient Sicilian aristocracy, he lived through the upheavals of Italian unification, which deeply informed his work. He wrote The Leopard in the 1950s, drawing on his family history and the decline of the Sicilian nobility. The novel was rejected by publishers before his death in 1957, but was published posthumously in 1958, winning the Strega Prize and becoming an international bestseller. Its lyrical prose and profound meditation on change, mortality, and the nature of power have secured its place as a classic of modern literature, later adapted into a celebrated film by Luchino Visconti.
