Geronimo

Geronimo (Goyahkla) was born in 1829 in what is now Arizona, then part of Mexico. He became a renowned warrior and spiritual leader, leading decades of resistance against Mexican and U.S. forces to protect Apache lands and way of life. After his final surrender in 1886, he was held as a prisoner of war. In 1905, he dictated his autobiography to S.M. Barrett, published as "Geronimo's Story of His Life." This work is a vital primary source on Apache culture, the brutal impact of colonization, and Geronimo's perspective on conflict and survival. His legacy endures as a symbol of Native American resistance and resilience.
