G. D. H. Cole

George Douglas Howard Cole (1889–1959) was a prolific English intellectual, historian, and economist, renowned for his development of guild socialist theory. A fellow of University College, Oxford, he wrote extensively on labor history, political thought, and economic planning, with major works such as The World of Labour (1913) and A History of Socialist Thought (1953–1960). Alongside his academic career, Cole was a popular author of detective novels, often co-writing with his wife, Margaret Cole. The Brooklyn Murders (1923) is one of several mysteries featuring the amateur sleuth Superintendent Wilson. Cole's literary legacy lies in his fusion of rigorous social analysis with accessible fiction, making complex political ideas available to a broad audience while contributing to the golden age of British crime writing.
